Wimbledon kicked off today, and started without the world’s #1 ranked player, Rafael Nadal. Thus, 5-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer enters the tournament as the top seed, and he started the tournaments festivities by playing in Wimbledon’s first match.
The result?
A straight set win for Federer.
Some other top players haven’t been as lucky early on at Wimbledon.
James Blake of the United States was the first seeded player at Wimbledon to go down. He lost to Andreas Seppi in straight sets. Blake was the 17th ranked player in the tournament. That was quite an embarrassing start for U.S. tennis fans, who now rest their hopes with the infamous Andy Roddick. Roddick, who is the 6th seed in this tournament, is set to play Jeremy Chardy of France, a non-seeded player.
Another American, #28-Mardy Fish, has already advanced to the second round after beating Sergio Roitman of Argentina.
And early on in his match, Robin Soderling of Sweden, the man who knocked Nadal out of the French Open, is struggling against the non-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
