TSW Daily Digest: The Overvaluation of the Point Guard

I love a good point guard!
What Steve Nash is doing in the playoffs is amazing! What point guards like Chauncey Billups, Steve Nash and Chris Paul have done over the years have been great to watch!
However, none of them have championship rings.
The only great point guard right now with a championship ring is Rajon Rondo, and he got his courteous of a Big Three that was a lot bigger two seasons ago.
In fact, if you look at the NBA Champions over the past ten years, you won’t find any trend whatsoever that suggests that having one of the two or three best point guards in the league leads to an NBA championship. You can even stretch that out to the Top 5 point guards.
The lone exception to the rule is Chauncey Billups and the Detroit Pistons who won the 2004 NBA Championship. But I repeat, those Pistons were the exception to the rule, especially given that they were one of the more all-around basketball teams in the history of the NBA.
Anyway, for those of you who believe John Wall is the top pick in this draft because he will be a top point guard for years to come, you might want to watch this episode of TheSportsWatchers Daily Digest.
