The NHL season has come to an end, and the Chicago Blackhawks are your Stanley Cup champions. Chicago claimed Game 6 in clutch fashion, winning the game by a score of 4-3.

In a series that needed overtime, instead of a seventh game, to decide the winner, the Blackhawks brought the NHL season to an end in surprising fashion, which can only be expected from what was such a surprising game.

Game 6 was tied at 1-1 well into the second period, when the game took a sudden turn. The Flyers got a quick goal to go up 2-1, but it was Chicago that was putting all of the pressure on the Flyers. That pressure resulted in a game-tying goal only moments after the Flyers had just taken the lead. And the barrage of shots didn’t stop there, as the Blackhawks would get one more goal only minutes before the end of the second period to go up by a count of 3-2.

For the first 9 minutes of the third period, Chicago was still the team applying all of the pressure, and that would show up in the final box score, as the Chicago won the shots on goal battle by a count of 41-24. But with a little less than half the period left, Philadelphia got the message and started to dominate the puck and the game. The Flyers couldn’t mount a clean attack, but it was clear which team was playing to win and which team was stalling. The Blackhawks were getting icing penalties and holding on to the puck, hoping that their one-goal lead would be all they needed to win Game 6. Instead, it was the pressure of Philly that finally got to Chicago, and with a lucky bounce, the Flyers got the game-tying goal with just 4 minutes left in the third period.

And then there was overtime.

There was no discernible difference between the two teams in overtime. Both had several shots on overtime, and both teams had their chances to win the game. Ultimately, it was a shot through the five-hole of the Flyers goaltender, as Patrick Kane’s slapshot just made it inside of the right post. Naturally, there were only a few people on the ice and in the stadium who knew the puck went in. Play went on for what seemed like 10 or 15 seconds, before Kane dropped his mitts and began celebrating. That shot was reviewed, but it only delayed the inevitable, as the Blackhawks won on that overtime goal, and they are now the champions of the NHL!
